Starting to feel the beginning of hot summer days approaching? Living in Florida we only have one season year round, and that is Summer. This is why I discovered the refreshing benefits of a Rose Water face spritz to cool me down. However, there are so many other important health benefits to using Rose Water. Read below and you’ll be inspired to make your own too!
Rose water has been used for thousands of years traditionally in beauty products and food/drink products. The health benefits are plentiful due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-septic properties. Some of the most common uses include:
Benefits of Rose Water:
- Helps soothe skin irritation such as eczema and rosacea;
- Soothes sore throats;
- Reduces skin redness – the antibacterial properties may reduce acne, and the anti-inflammatory properties reduce redness and puffiness;
- Helps prevent and treats infections due to its antiseptic properties;
- Contains antioxidants;
- Heals cuts, scars, and burns;
- Enhances mood with its strong antidepressant and anti-anxiety properties;
- Relieves headaches due to its de-stressing effects, either as rose water drink or essential oils used in aromatherapy;
- Has anti-aging properties and may reduce the appearance of wrinkles;
- Soothes digestion problems;
- Shrinks pores and makes for a great make-up setting spray.
How to Use Rose Water:
- Use it as a facial cleanser or toner.
- Use it in recipes.
- Create a mist by putting it in a spray bottle.
How to Make Rose Water at Home:
Ingredients:
ROSES: 6- 12 stems roses – Organic roses are preferred since they are free of artificial dyes, fragrances, and pesticides. Pink roses tend to give a stronger color.
WATER: Distilled Water (enough to cover the rose petals).
SPRAY BOTTLE: 1 Glass Spray bottle (glass is preferred not required). The one pictured above can be found here: Glass Spray Bottle Set from Amazon.
Instructions:
- Remove petals from stems and run them under luke-warm water to remove any leftover residue.
- Add water to a large pot and top with enough distilled water to just cover (no more or you’ll dilute the rosewater).
- Set your burner to medium-low heat and bring to a simmer and cover.
- Let simmer for 20-30 minutes until the petals have lost their color and are a pale pink.
- Strain the mixture to separate the petals from water.
- Discard petals, pour cooled down rosewater into your glass bottle.
*** Dried rose petals can be used in the place of the fresh rose petals as well.
To Use as Facial Toner:
- For every 1 T of pure rosewater, add 4 T of distilled water;
- Add to your glass spray bottle;
- Refrigerate to use as a toner and facial cooling mist.
