For many years I have been whole heartedly against replacing my traditional Christmas tree for an artificial tree. But this year, I had my heart set on a flocked tree for our family room. Last year I had a traditional tree in this room, and although it smelled amazing, it didn’t really compliment the colors and tones of the room. Our family room is white and bright, with lots of pastels, a very coastal color palette, shiplap and all. And although a Christmas tree belongs really anywhere, I thought a flocked tree would be stunning in this room. Yes, there are real trees that come flocked, but did you know that they don’t require water and the smell is not as potent? Well, I opted for the artificial tree, I decided the flocked tree would always be the better option for this room, and now that’s it’s complete, I couldn’t be more satisfied with my decision.
Pros of Artificial Christmas Trees:
Along the way, I’ve found some real pros to having an artificial tree!!
- Ours was very easy to assemble, and no need to hammer or screw into a base full of water;
- No more stringing lights for a pre-lit tree!!! (this one is enough to convince anyone)
- Branches are super sturdy, so they hold up even the heaviest of ornaments, unlike real trees that only certain thick branches do;
- Pesky branches can be twisted and folded in different directions;
- Shape of the tree is perfect depending on the style you choose, so no need to hunt through endless trees to find the “one”;
- Easy to disassemble, and store with the right storage container/bag,
Cons of Artificial Christmas Trees:
- The base of the tree requires a tree collar to look best, the stem on the bottom of ours is a skinny metal pole that leads to 4 legs, it’s hard to cover with just a tree skirt. A collar is best, or some creativity to cover the pole;
- Our tree didn’t have a sturdy stem on the top for the star, so we had to gather a few branches to secure our star;
- Doesn’t have the amazing pine tree smell of a traditional Christmas tree – this is a big deal for some, especially me!

We Finally Purchased:
Home Depot’s Home Decorator’s Collection
After considering all the higher end trees, we saw the Home Decorator’s Collection 9 foot flocked tree at Home Depot of all places while shopping for other items. I was impressed with it’s life-like branches, well distributed snow on branches, and the shape of the tree. But what was most impressive was the price compared to other trees I had researched. It accomplishes everything you need for your Christmas decor and at half the price. That was a win for us!
